Recently I asked a banker the following question. Here is his reply. Do you agree with it?
Steve
Question: I guess the for me the ethical problem with banking comes down to seeing a dog laying by the side of the road that has been struck by a car. Do you just drive by without concern and say that keeping cars moving is your primary goal or do you stop and provide compassionate care for the wounded because it is the right thing to do?
Banker Answer: The answer to the dog question is, it depends on who you are. If you are a private citizen, you take care of the dog if you love dogs, otherwise you ignore it. If you are a representative of the SPCA, then you must take care of the dog. If you are a traffic cop you must focus on keeping cars moving.
The same logic applies to loan defaults. If you work for a housing agency or a private foundation helping tenants, then your job is to prevent evictions. If you work for a bank, your job is to get the loan back. The fact that homeowners in default need someone to take care of them does not mean that that someone has to be the bank.
