I’m not sure if anyone found it a bit perplexing that U.S. presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, also a Southern Baptist minister, held a press conference to denounce negative political ads only to make available and to play the negative ad his campaign had created against his opponent, Mit Romney.

The Washington Post article says “Huckabee decried gutter politics in America but then directed the attention of scores of reporters and television cameras to a movie screen, where he played the 30-second hit piece on Romney’s honesty and record.”

No matter what the context is, it just feels a bit disingenuous to disclaim negative mud slinging political advertisements only to show everyone the bad ad you won’t run. “Ladies and gentlemen of the press, here is the ad I won’t show people” - Really! Forgive me but is that really a righteous and religious thing to do. Under the category of WWJD “What Would Jesus Do”, I doubt it would be that.

I can see it now, Jesus says, “Ladies and gentlemen of Arithmathea, here is the porn movie I will not show you.”

I’m not holding Huckabee’s religious beliefs or the fact that he is a religious leader against him. But I do think that if he is going to hold himself out as a Baptist minister, man of the cloth, and disciple of Christ, that he has an obligation to live his life in accordance with the highest moral standards. And I’m not sure that an advertisement against his political rival that uses “No executions” as a character flaw is the point to make.

This isn’t like he took a second glance at some hot babe walking down the street. It’s hard to see this as being accidental when you rent a room and call all the national press together to say “Look at what I’m not going to show people.” What’s next, a press conference where he stands at the podium with his mistress to denounce extramarital affairs?

If you truly want to denounce negative political advertising, don’t show the ad. It seems super ridiculous that all of this happens in front of a background that proclaims “Enough is Enough”.

The Hypocritical Press Conference

The true test will be to see if from this point forward that Mike Huckabee does not run anymore attack ads, anywhere or against anyone. If that is the case then he will be man of his word and I would admire that. If that becomes the case then I can only attribute the “Enough is Enough” press conference to stupidity rather than the attention getting deception that it appears to be.

I had really enjoyed the earlier Huckabee commercial staring Chuck Norris but I’m afraid this latest stunt has gone from clever to hypocrisy.
