In a move that can only be thought of as hostile and devious, the once domain name market leader, Netowrk Solutions, has now put in place an evil policy that takes any domain name you search for with them, and not buy, off the market for up to five days.

As a domain name registrar they can reserve a domain name for free and not have to pay for it. Since they hold the name hostage that you searched on their service, if you want to purchase the domain name from a cheaper provider, then you can’t.

Based on current domain name searches Network Solutions has managed to hijack 72,000 domain names and hold them hostage for five days.

I’ve had a problem with Network Solutions for quite a while now. Despite being a “VIP” domain customers, whatever the hell that means, they refuse to provide me with the transfer code so I can move some of my decade long domains to my preferred provider.

Customer service response to my repeated requests, “You can get your code online”, nice, but you can’t. I don’t know if this is because my domain names were first registered with them back in the Web 0.1 days or what.

As more time goes by I’m less and less impressed with Network Solutions.

THE LESSON: Expect other domain name registrars to follow this plan so pick your preferred domain name provider and do your searches with them and then buy your cheap domain names there as well.
