Are you currently reading Credit, Debt, Life and Steve from home? Do you have high-speed Internet access? If you answered Yes to both of these questions, then I may have an interesting option to help with monthly bills.

logofon.png Ever heard of Fon Wi-fi For Everyone? It’s a group of people, like you and I, which combine their efforts to create a free worldwide Wi-Fi community by sharing a portion of their broadband Internet connection. Registered users of the Fon community are known as Funeros. Here’s how it works.

First you need to buy the La Fonera router. To extend the coverage you should also get the Fontenna range extender. Fon has bundled the two devices under the name La Fonera+, which you can get for $49.95.

Second, once you’ve received the equipment, you need to add La Fonera router to your home network and in less than 5 minutes you’re ready to go. A portion of your Internet connection – securely isolated from your home network – is now shared to anyone using a wireless device. From now on, Funeros can access the Internet through your Fon Spot.

As a Funeros you have 2 options: Either you become like a Linus or a Bill.

Linuses offer their Internet connection for free to the Fon community. If you take this free way, then Fon grants you free Internet access everywhere on their network. This could be useful if you travel a lot in regions where they have coverage. You can search for Wi-Fi Fon Spots before you hit the road using Fon’s Google Map interface available here.

Bills not only offer their Fon Spots to the Fon community, but also to outsiders, known as Aliens, for $3 per period of 24 hours. Fon shares 50% of its net revenues every time Aliens use their Fon Passes through your Fon Spot. To get the net amount out of the $3 you deduct taxes and PayPal fees, then what’s left is 50-50.

If you live in the prairies far away from civilization, then you should not plan your pension fund on Fon. But if you’re downtown or near a strategic area (like a hotel full of Aliens), you’re casa might just be located close to a perfect spot where Wi-Fi access would sell like hot tacos.
