Years ago I learned a difficult business lesson, the hard way, about how not to get stiffed when getting paid.

I’d been stiffed on payment exactly three times until I learned my lesson and then once I learned my lesson, I’ve never had that problem ever again.

I suppose the logic behind this lesson is sound and deep rooted in in-depth academic studies but from my experience it is just good common sense.

So here is the business lesson of the day, don’t accept cartoon checks.

It's Happy Bunny Personal Checks Let the World Kno

Seriously, the first cartoon check I ever took was an Elmer Fudd check. It bounced. Next was a Daffy Duck, yep, bounced. Finally, despite my gut telling me “NO”, I accepted a Bugs Bunny check and dammit, it bounced also. This time I asked my bank to not redeposit the check. I wanted it back and it proudly hung on the wall in front of my desk for years as a reminder to not accept any cartoon checks for business payments.

Call it a silly rule, but since I follow that rule it hasn’t let me down in years.

I’ve never accepted checks from these categories below but I wouldn’t want to, for no other reason than my gut says so. And this time, I’m listening to my gut.
