There is almost nothing more pathetic than listening to broadcasters and politicians, pontificating about “these young people” as if young people are the only ones that use the internet. On my way to the office this morning I felt like swerving off the road and ending it all after listening to the interview below about Bebo. What an unbelievable load of crap.

Just what young people need, more dismissive talk about how they should act and what they should feel. According to these “experts” young people that use social networking sites have a tragic lack of a future and can kill themselves because social networking sites are out of touch. Really? Who is out of touch here?

“The whole lack of a future for these young people which is absolutely tragic.”

Next the “experts” turn their deep insight to Habbo Hotel which they claim is almost as bad or maybe even worse. The guy talks about how a young person cried out for help and other people in Habbo Hotel didn’t take them seriously. I wonder if he’s actually been around teenagers in the last 20 years?

And then we are told that maybe it is the social networking sites’ responsibility to help these people not kill themselves. I can see it now, Bebo monitors you online and as soon as you type “This connection is so slow I want to kill myself” your IP address flashes up on the screen in Habo central and then a pop-up appears, “Do you want to end it all, click here.”

Or how about “Thank you for calling Facebook technical support. If you want to off yourself, please press one. Thank you, please wait for the next available suicide counselor. You are number 13 in the queue. Your call is very important to us.”

Listen To What I Have to Deal With on BBC Radio Here in the UK

Granted, I am an American in England and have to endure the language barrier a bit but just listen to what you have to listen to on the radio. Sadly I can now understand 90% of what they are saying but, can you? And no fair listening to it over and over.
