April writes in:

“Steve, My husband passed away August 07. He did not have health insurance. He was in the hospital four times and owed over $300,000 dollars in medical bills. He was out of work, the whole year and did not have an estate. Do I have to pay?”

No.

Seriously, here is a good free publication you can download, that I wrote titled “Widow or Widower: How to Handle the Bills After the Death of a Loved One“.

My Dad died in December of 2008. I thought I had to pay his bills, but an attorney informed me that I do not. Is it true?

The creditors can only look to his estate that he left. If there was money in the estate that would all they could go after. I’d listen to what the local lawyer, licensed in your state, had to say.
