How ironic. I was reading an article about New York Governor Elliot Spitzer and his getting snagged in the prostitution ring sting. Somehow by following a bunch of links I wound up on this page and I just watched a most disturbing WWII Army film, “Easy to Get”
Corporal Baker is about to get a lesson in life he won’t soon forget. He’s home on furlough and just met the perfect girl. She’s sweet, doesn’t drink, or go to the juke joints. But the truth about his perfect girl is that she’s filthy and diseased. Banker is about to find out just how easy gonorrhea is to get.
Now here is a part of WWII that our grandfathers failed to mention. The Army training film talks about a lot of stuff but I’d never heard about Pro-Stations. Apparently the Army had walk in offices where soldiers could go after sex to clean their, you know. The film even shows the process, including where you put that tube of ointment. Ouch.
If that’s not disturbing enough then it won’t take you but a moment to see that the entire lecture about venereal disease, gonorrhea and syphilis is all targeted at black soldiers. And when the white voice over guy talks about “our people”, that’s disturbing on a whole different level.
So after watching the film I learned that black soldiers that served in the Army were taught that women are filthy, diseased, to be stayed away from, that “you can’t trust a $2 whore”, and that you better use a condom or visit a pro-station and wash your, you know, immediately after having sex.
I wonder if the Army put Pro-Stations in Malibu or if it was assumed that white soldiers didn’t get VD?
As if the world today doesn’t frighten people enough, imagine how screwed up watching that film in the 1940s would make you.
After you watch the film come back post your comments about the film and let me know if you found it as disturbing as I did.
