If someone is looking to be offended, I promise you that no matter what you say you'll offend them. Heck, you'll offend them asking "what" to say. Bad idea to over analyze these things. Political correctness has turned into a bloomin' headache. So someone calls me white; I don't care. I would not say, "NO! Correction, I am Irish, Scottish, swedish, white American! See!" Jesus Christ. Who cares? I don't care if you call me a white European. So?! People who wine and scream about these things have MAJOR hang ups and they NEED a life.

Conclusion: If someone get upset with your innocent mistake, they are to be called a nut. Or a fruitcake; whatever is politically correct.

There is a differnce and I'll try to explain it. The term African-American is used for black people who have roots in America. They are part of the black american culture. They are the desendants of slave that were brought to America.

On the other hand you have black people of the Caribbean. Like my family. I was born in New York but my parents and their parents were born in Jamaica. That makes me Caribbean-American. We have a completely different culture. Yes, we are all of one race but our cultures are different. Honestly, when I am referred to as African-American I inform that person that I am Caribbean-American. If you called my mother African-American should would flip out lol. Not that she views African-Americans in a bad light, it's just not who she is.

Most black people from different cultures are really tired of being lumped together as African-American based on our skin colors. It tends to negate whatever other country they are born and raised in. There are Dominican blacks, Cuban blacks, Brazilian blacks, Puerto Rican blacks etc... so to label us all as African-American will be seen as offensive.

It's like labeling a Russian as being Polish-it wouldn't be correct-the assumption would just simply be based on skin color.

To sum it up I would rather be called black than for someone to assume that I am African-American because of the color of my skin.

Hope this helped.

[...] When is Someone Black or African-American? I’m probably insane for actually writing about this but following-up my recent post on race in the race, I want to admit that I am utterly confused about what to say. When is someone black or African-American? Is Barack Obama a Kenyan-Kansasian? Part of this is political correctness gone mad and the other part of my confusion has to do with not wanting to offend anyone. My life over the past couple of years has been divided between the U.S. and the U.K. I’ve also been around Europe and to Sou [...]
