I thought I was being very clever in having a current backup copy of my aviation research data, 500 GB worth. This included a year or so of document and 16 mm film restoration and research work.
In my recent move back across the Atlantic from the UK my primary computer developed a few quirks and the 500 GB RAID array I had to protect data wound up having some real problems with two consecutive drives failing. No problem I thought, I’ve got my backup for just such an occasion.
I plugged in the hard drive and it connected just fine. I went to copy the data off and it started getting very unsteady and started to clack, a sound you never like to hear from a hard drive. I immediately turned off the external RAID 0 drive and found a place to send it to for a very expensive recovery process.
I only hope they can recover some data from it. Actually I hope they can recover all the data from it!
I was just reading an article about backups that said be sure to make a backup of your backup of critical data. If I would have read that before, I would have laughed but now, not so much.
And while the law of averages would be against two separate RAID arrays failing at the same time, go figure. Of course it will happen.
My other two drives that I was using for photo storage, that I pulled out of the box after 2 years, are both dead. Neither will spin. So I’ll see how this data recovery place does and then I’ll have to send them as well. And oh yes, one was the primary drive and the other, you guessed it, the backup.
Sucks.
