I’ve long resisted the iPhone movement. I certainly did not want to be on the bleeding edge of technology so much that I was going to camp all night waiting for the release. In fact I had no intentions of buying one at all, even as fanatic as iJustine is about them. (iJustine follows me on Twitter so when you see this blatant plug for you Justine, enjoy)

But along came a couple of really cool apps for the iPhone and that got my attention. I’m in the process of changing all my many sites over to a new dedicated server at a new host. At times that can be as painful as getting a new set of teeth. Things will work out better in the end but the transition, never fun.

I did not want to carry my laptop around with me to check on the new server, tune it and reboot it when it was not feeling well, but with an iPhone app, iSSH, now I can.

I can check WiFi connections with WiFiFoFum and even FTP and Ping my servers to check on their health but what really got me moving to get an iPhone was the WordPress application that allows me to now blog and upload photos from the iPhone.

So I was Persuaded and Ready to Buy an iPhone

I did my homework and found out that there were three places I could purchase an iPhone; BestBuy, AT&T, and Apple. And seeing how I had only been an AT&T customer for 8 months, I knew there was no way I was going to be eligible for a subsidized upgrade from my current phone to the iPhone. I was already prepared to pay full retail for the phone.

So I rode the Burgman scooter down to BestBuy and waited patiently for the next mobile phone salesperson to help me. She took my current AT&T phone number and said I was not eligible for an upgrade. Not a problem, I was already aware of that.

But she said she would not sell me an iPhone at full retail either, since I was not eligible. When I asked her what “not eligible” really meant she said “It means you’re not eligible to buy an iPhone.” Well that helped to clarify everything.

So off I went to the AT&T corporate store. They would not sell me an iPhone. They said I was not eligible for an upgrade. Again I offered to pay full retail for it and they said they could not sell me one either. The AT&T store sent me back on the scooter, this time to the Apple store.

Finally I arrived at the Apple store. There they not only sold me the iPhone but activated it immediately for me and I was able to walk out of the store, a little lighter in the wallet, but with a new iPhone that had my old AT&T number on it.

Entirely Jealous Danny

Entirely Jealous Danny

Danny who was with me was entirely jealous that the woman next to us was buying five iPhones. I’m sure he was eagerly watching for one to accidently fall on the floor. Danny, bad news, the five second rule does not apply to iPhones.

But all was not lost for Danny. I did give him my iPod Nano since I can now listen to tunes on the iPhone.

This is not my first experience with buying things at the Apple store and boy have they won me over as a fan. Each time I go into an Apple store in the U.S. or internationally I know what to expect; friendly and helpful service.

The guy yesterday was a dumfounded as I was why the other two places would not sell me the iPhone at full retail but I’m glad they didn’t since the Apple store did such a fantabulous job of helping me make the transition.

And last night, after getting the new iPhone all configured I even fell asleep to the sound of rain on a tin roof thanks to my other new iPhone application, Ambiance.
